Alfred Kubin (1877 - 1959), an Austrian printmaker and illustrator, is considered an important representative of symbolism and expressionism. During nazism his dark, macabre subjects were declared "degenerate art". In 1957 he was awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art.
