The Visionary Photographic Worlds of Michael Mapes


New York-based artist Michael Mapes uses hundreds of photographic fragments, gelatin capsules, magnifiers, plastic bags and insect pins to create astounding collages that can be equally considered artworks and scientific specimens. For his latest works Mapes used photographs of paintings by Dutch masters like Rembrandt or Nicolaes Eliazs Pickenoy as inspiration for large scale specimen boxes.
