The great chemist, pharmacologist, pioneer, psychonaut, author and psychedelic hero Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin passed away yesterday after a battle with liver cancer. He was 88.
During his long career Sasha has developed and personally tested (via bioassay) more than 200 psychoactive molecules. He was considered the "godfather" of MDMA, the emphatogen that he introduced to psychologists and psychotherapists (like Leo Zeff) in the 1970s.
He co-wrote with his wife Ann the umprescindible psychedelic tomes PHIKAL (1991) and THIKAL (1997), in 2002 he published The Simple Plant Isoquinolines and in 2011 The Shulgin Index vol. 1 (with Tania Manning and Paul Daley.
Sasha will be bitterly missed by the international psychedelic family and by all the true lovers and supporters of science, research and free-thinking.
Personally I'll post something about this legendary researcher in the next few days.
My deep love and heartfelt condolences to Ann, his life partner and collaborator...
RIP dear Sasha
